Cowan Magic, Monsters, and Make-Believe Heroes How Myth and Religion Shape Fantasy Culture Author : Douglas E. Cowan Publisher: University of California Press ISBN: Category: Religion Page: View: Magic, Monsters, and Make-Believe Heroes looks at fantasy film, television, and participative culture as evidence of our ongoing need for a mythic vision—for stories larger than ourselves into which we write ourselves and through which we can become the heroes of our own story. Rather, it is precisely because these stories are so fantastic, some resonating so deeply that we elevate them to the status of religion. Illuminating everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dungeons and Dragons, and from Drunken Master to Mad Max, Douglas E.
Cowan offers a modern manifesto for why and how mythology remains a vital force today. The Game Master's Kit is a key accessory for your Dragon Age RPG campaign. It features a three-panel hardback screen that puts all the essential game info right in front you, and features a brand new page adventure that takes your PCs into the Deep Roads. It also includes 4 quick reference cards that put the stunts and actions at your fingertips, and a combat tracker that you can write on with wet or dry erase markers. The Game Master's Kit is the perfect complement to the Dragon Age Core Rulebook and will help you run your game with style.
Players take the roles of fortune-seeking adventurers in a world where powerful individuals called Icons pursue goals that may preserve an ancient empire, or destroy it.. By defining each characters relationship to the Icons, along with a rich background and a trait that makes him or her unique in the world, 13th Age lays the groundwork for epic stories that emerge through play. The World of Lazarus is the first campaign setting for Green Ronin's new Modern AGE RPG. Based on the critically acclaimed Lazarus series by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark and presented by Image Comics, the book brings this noir dystopia to tabletop roleplaying games. In the near future, time has rendered death obsolete, and life infinitely cheap.
In the wake of governments' failure and global upheaval, the Families stepped in and divvied up the world. Now peace and order reign in a world of technological marvels and neo-feudalism.
I wanted to roll up a bunch of Modern AGE characters but it took time to roll up one and the write the results down on paper. Now all it takes is clicking on the Randomize button or refreshing the page to get a new level 1 character. The generator follows the rules for creating a new character by rolling dice as written on the Modern AGE Basic Rulebook. For parts where the player is given an option between a few choices, the generator picks one at random from the available choices. In wanting to better understand the character creation process in Modern AGE, I took the PCs from my post-apocalyptic mini campaign last year the one I dubbed as The Laver and ported them over to Modern AGE while being constrained by the character creation rules. I think it turned out pretty cool. I'll be showing these to my old players and see what they make of it. Maybe they would be interested to do a one shot using their old characters but using Modern AGE? One of the things I noticed when I ran The Expanse RPG with some friends who were new to RPGs was that they found the stunt lists overwhelming.
This was despite my asking them to pick a couple of preferred stunts at the start of the multi-session one-shot. I ended up giving them the abridged stunt list from the free Expanse RPG Quickstart. The stunts from the book can get a bit wordy but understandably so because they have to be very clear on what the stunt can and cannot do. However this results in longer text to read through as you try to pick a suitable stunt for the stunt points you got during play. Of course, I know that if we continued playing for many sessions, everyone will just start to remember which stunts are useful and which ones are their favorites.
Though that may be the case, for the Modern AGE one-shot or mini-campaign I'm planning, I want new players to just be able to join the game and use most of the stunts and not get overwhelmed. Or at least not slow down the game too much. Toward that, I created this Modern AGE stunt cheat sheet that contains nearly all the stunts from the book but I tried to condense the text so that it will hopefully be quicker to read through. I also highlighted some words and terms for improved readability. I had to leave out a few stunts in some places so that it all fit a back-to-back sheet of paper. This way, I can hand this out to every player instead of multiple A4-sized cards with different groups of stunts each. An Action List is also included. I'm currently readying for a Modern AGE RPG mini campaign. I wanted to make some pre-generated Player Character PC sheets for a player who might want to join but can't be bothered creating one from scratch.
Toward that, I wanted the character sheet to contain certain things like a bigger box for Drive so I that its Quality and Downfall can be spelt out in it. I want there to be a Portrait box on the front so I can have a picture of the character on it. I'd like to have boxes for Conviction I'll be using the optional rule and Power Points PP. I've looked at the standard Character Sheet for Modern AGE as well as all the other fan-made ones and even the ones for The Expanse RPG , Threefold and Lazarus. Each one has a little bit of what I like but is missing some of the things I like. In the end, I just made my own custom Modern AGE Character Sheet for use in my campaign. Since I've already done the work, I might as well share it here in case anybody else finds it useful. I love the simplicity and flexibility of TinyD6.
I've run a couple of short campaigns on it and I got good feedback from the players. Some did mention that they wished there was a way to improve their known traits to give them that feeling of gaining mastery over something they're already good at. I couldn't think of a good solution for them at the time other than using a different system all together. Fast forward to today and I think I have figured out something that can satisfy some of my players' desire to further improve their characters' traits. When a PC earns enough XP, instead of picking a new trait or new weapon mastery, they can opt to give a trait or mastered weapon a bonus. You can roll your Edge Dice on a test only if you fail. This is just to avoid rolling the Edge Dice each and every time. You succeed if any of the rolled Edge Dice come up as 6.
He rolls at advantage with 3d6. The result comes up as [2], [3] and [4]. Normally, that would mean he has failed. He rolls 2d6 and it came up as [3] and [6]. Because he got a 6 with the Edge Dice, he succeeded at opening the locked door. What does this mean in terms of chance of success? A PC with 2 Edge Dice on a trait rolling at disadvantage will have a chance of success comparable to a PC with no edge dice rolling normally. Refer to the table to get the chance for success for each type of roll along with how Edge Dice affects the success rate. I hope this would still satisfy players who are looking to increase their trait expertise. Also, the edge dice will only be applicable to traits where they make sense.
I don't know how well this will work out in actual play so I will still need to playtest it. Just putting it out here in case somebody else might find it useful. If you use it at your table, please let me know if it went well or not. I'm still rereading the core book after it had sat on my shelf for almost 2 years. At the same time, I switch to the Companion book to look into a couple of options there that interest me— Complications similar to the Expanse Churn mechanic and Events. I got a bit excited so I created a handout for each player that's a back-to-back sheet that contains the list of actions, the combat-related stunt tables, the exploration-related stunt tables and the social-related stunt tables.
Just so they don't have to wait in turns sharing the stunt cards from the GM Kit. Also, I printed out the core book and comb-bound them into 6 thinner books for use at the table so that I can keep my hardback pristine and for my own use only. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to running the game for my friends some are new to RPGs. I just have to wait for the lockdown to finally be lifted where I live. I made a White Box Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game GM screen a few days ago and have updated the referee sheets by adding a bit about light and triggered traps and the list of monsters sorted by HDE in a fourth panel. I then put it up on DriveThruRPG for free well, technically Pay-What-You-Want so it can be more easily found by others who might want it. A few of them have never played RPGs before or at least not in a very long time. In the end, I've narrowed down the choice to White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game WB FMAG.
A few of the things I like about it that I think would make it quick and simple to run are: players only need a d20 and a D6 or more ; single saving throws; the thief has a X-in-6 skill check; group initiative; and simplified monster listings also HD is the attack bonus and Save is HD. For my prep, I wanted to finalize the house rules for the campaign stuff so I can hand it over to my players at the table. Here is the third draft, if anybody is interested. I also formatted it in the WB FMAG style. Now that I've concluded that I'll be using Basic Fantasy RPG for the weekly lunch-break campaign I want to run at work, I've fashioned myself a portable GM screen for that system. I liked how the visual style of OSE's reference sheets made it easy for me to reference them so I made this screen similar in style.
